The Course

This course aims to help students relate theological study to the life and ministry of faith communities, with particular emphasis on its relation to the pastoral task. Such theological study and research may be from one or more diverse disciplines within theology, including biblical studies, systematic theology, missiology, liturgy and religious studies.

The Northern Ordination Course primarily prepares people for ministry in the Methodist and Anglican Churches. It does this through a combination of evening and weekend teaching. The College of the Resurrection primarily prepares candidates for ordination in the Church of England through a residential course. It draws students from across the country and usually has several overseas students, from a variety of Christian traditions. This MA forms part of the programme for both institutions, and students who are not preparing for ordination study alongside those who are. Teaching is by the staff of the College and the Course, each lecturing in areas of their specialism. Some teaching is also provided by the staff of the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Leeds.

Time Commitment

Full time study involves around 4 hours of lectures per week. It is expected that for every hour spent in a lecture an extra 8 hours should be spent in private study. In addition, students are required to undertake some form of supervised pastoral placement of about 40 hours.

Different modules are taught at different times, some during the day and some in the evenings and at weekends. It is possible to select modules in such a way that the whole course involves lectures only in the evenings and at weekends. We would be happy to advise you on the choice of modules, to match both your interests and time commitments.
